Red, red, the lights glow red
Beware the danger up ahead…
On the frozen island of Skane, the sky speaks. Beautiful lights appear on clear nights, and their colours have meaning: Green means all is well, and the Goddess is happy. Blue means a snow storm is on the way.
And then there’s red. Red is rare. A warning.
Seventeen years ago, the sky turned red just as Ósa was born, unleashing a plague that claimed the lives of hundreds of villagers, including her own mother. This time, when the night sky once again bleeds crimson, she must discover how to stop the onslaught before so many lives are lost again.
Not only are the characters in A Shiver of Snow and Sky absolutely wonderful
except you Anneka, you go sit in a corner, the world-building is breathtaking. This story has been described as “the beautiful writing and world-building of Leigh Bardugo & Laini Taylor meets the icy setting and lurking darkness and danger of The Wall and the Others in Game of Thrones” AND I 100% AGREE.
Lisa’s writing had me SHIVERING even when it was reasonably warm (remember, I first read this back in mid-May). This story is an amazing adventure, and reads like a classic but despite the above comparisons, is unlike anything I’ve read before. The fact that I managed to devour this in about 24hrs, when I had been in a dissertation-induced slump, says so much.
I am a sucker for a well-developed romance and the chemistry between Ósa and Ivar was evident from the very beginning but had such a natural and realistic development. Not only that, but the obstacles Ósa faces and the determination and bravery she faces them with was truly inspiring.
Overall, the story is the perfect blend of magic and adventure with an unforgettable world, centred around a character that makes me wish I was a little braver. I enjoyed it so much, in fact, that I’ve convinced the wonderful Olivia at Scholastic to let me host a giveaway! You can find it on my Twitter page here, and it’ll end on the 13th of October!
Time has quite literally flown by because there’s no way it’s been almost four months since I read the wonderful A Shiver of Snow and Sky by the equally wonderful Lisa Lueddecke. But it has. Which means A Shiver of Snow and Sky is finally here! To celebrate the publication of Lisa’s debut, we’ve teamed up to create a fan cast of the Shiver and Snow characters!
1. Ósa (the main character)
Initially, I suggested Sophie Turner for Ósa’s heartless sister, Anneka, but Sophie Turner is so precious and being newly blonde, she’d be perfect for Ósa.
2. Ósa’s dad
I mean, Mads Mikkelsen would be perfect. Just look at this picture, too.
3. Anneka (the main character’s sister)
Hair as fiery as her attitude, Anneka would be perfectly portrayed by Deborah Ann Woll. I haven’t seen her in anything but Lisa has mentioned that she’s in Daredevil which I have been meaning to watch for a while.
4. Ivar (the swoon-worthy best friend)
We have hit a crossroads here. Lisa has chosen Matt Czuchry whereas I think Zach Roerig would nail Ivar. But that might just be because I have a soft spot for Matt Donovan. (Also, Lisa has precedence because she did kinda create this character).
WAIT, there’s more! The lovely Olivia at Scholastic has given me the chance to give away not 1, not 2 but three copies of A Shiver of Snow and Sky! I’ll be holding the giveaway over on my Twitter later today (6th Oct), so keep an eye out! If you’ve grabbed your copy from your nearest book store, help us celebrate release by using the hashtag #SnowandSky!
